Keeping Children Safe on School Buses

September brings the start of a new school year.  It also brings unfortunate stories of children forgotten on school buses.

To prevent any child from enduring such an experience, I planned and executed an awareness effort to encourage school bus drivers to check for children at the end of a route.  The encouragement came in the form of a sticker for school bus operators to place above the door inside their school buses.

Using my professional contacts, I approached the New Jersey School Bus Contractors Association and the School Transportation Supervisors of New Jersey to join the effort.

The groups informed their members about our awareness effort and how to receive the free stickers.  We distributed more than nine thousand, far exceeding our expectations.

Both organizations also cooperated with our video news release, which described the prevention effort and how the department was working to keep children from being forgotten and left alone on school buses.

The video news release was distributed via email to more than 9,000 people and posted on the department’s website and Facebook and YouTube pages. (PDF)
